Bedbugs are one of the common pests found in the Portland metro area. They can cause rashes, allergic symptoms, and even psychological trauma. Identifying bedbugs before their presence is a catastrophic infestation will definitely help you rest easier—figuratively and literally.

Bedbugs feed on human blood, so the first signifier of a bedbug infestation is minuscule red or brown dots appearing across your bed sheets. These dots can be excrement left behind by the bugs, or microscopic drops of your own blood that have spread gingerly to create a tiny dot. Larger reddish stains are more often a result of the bugs being crushed while navigating your bedclothes. Look out for any red/brown stains that appear suddenly—they are surefire indicators of a bedbug infestation.

Minuscule eggs and eggshells are also indicators of a bedbug infestation. These can be trickier to isolate and identify. Eggs will be roughly one millimeter, but there will be several. Also look for the pale yellow skins that the larvae discard as they mature.

The biggest signal that you have a bedbug infestation is seeing the actual bedbugs with your naked eye. Though they are remarkably small, approximately the width of a credit card, they can be spotted easily against stark white bedclothes. Look for small insects about the size of a watermelon seed with light to dark brown coloration.
