Of the many attractive neighborhoods nestled in Clackamas, Ashcreek is arguably the most charming. Here you’ll find frolicking families, nurturing communities, and an abundance of dense, verdant landscapes. Keeping these homes free from damage caused by carpenter ants can be difficult, especially in warmer seasons. And considering the damage carpenter ants are capable of, if you suspect an infestation the sooner you act, the better.
Carpenter ants do more damage than any other wood destroying insect in our area. Although termites get more attention, carpenter ants are far more common in Clackamas. Any ant larger than 1/4 inch is most likely a carpenter ant, though they vary greatly in size depending on the amount of nutrition within the nest. The smaller ants are actually older than the larger ants, which have benefited from the increased amount of food in the nest and grown more. If you are seeing carpenter ants with wings, this is an indication that the nest has been established for several years and is now reproducing with these winged ants (called “swarmers”).
Carpenter ants do not actually eat the wood in your home. They actually excavate galleries in the wood for nesting and laying eggs. If you are seeing a substance that looks like sawdust, this could be a sign of carpenter ants. Food for the carpenter ant nest is usually found outside as they feed on other insects and parts of plants. For this reason, an effective way to exterminate carpenter ants is to do a solid perimeter treatment, knowing that the ants must cross it in order to bring food back to the nest.
