It’s the New Year and some of us are earnestly keeping to our resolutions. According to Offers.com, a company that tracks New Year’s resolutions, people’s top resolutions are changing. When losing weight was once the top of the list, now saving money is moving towards the top of resolution lists, followed by travel and getting a new hobby. We have one more resolution for you: Keep your home pest free.

If you keep your home pest free, you will be on-trend with the rest of the nation because you will save money too.  Here are three easy ways toyou clean up crumbs and spills immediately it makes less work in the long run. Sweep and vacuum your floors regularly. Keep food, especially pet food, in sealed containers. Pet food is often the culprit when inviting unwanted pests.

REPAIR WINDOWS, SCREENS and DOORS

These are the pores of your home and easily the most vulnerable point of entry. Replace screens and weather stripping if needed. If you have a broken window, fix it and make sure it seals when shut. Check for holes around doorways as well. Your foundation is also vulnerable. Check the perimeter of your home and cover holes with caulk or cover them with screens.

MOISTURE is the ENEMY

Anywhere moisture collects is a potential haven for all pests. First check inside and outside you home for standing water—even if it’s a small puddle. Then check the plumbing and all exposed pipes for leaks. Not only does moisture attract pests, it also creates a risk for mold and mildew.

An OUNCE of PREVENTION

These preventative tips should help keep those pests out. These are your first lines of defense when it comes to pest control. You may want to make sure you haven’t already been invaded. You want to check walls, wires, and insulation for gnaw marks. If you find gnaw marks look for little black dots that can be smaller than a grain of rice.  This is an indicator that you have rodents of some kind.
