We have plenty of nuisance wildlife here in Sandy, Oregon and the rest of the Portland Metro area. It is common to see a raccoon, opossum or skunk roaming around our neighborhoods and they are only looking for two things, food and shelter. Unfortunately, your nice warm crawl space with all of its insulation and seclusion, provides the perfect home for these animals to live and breed. If you are unlucky enough to get one of them in your crawl space, they can do a whole lot of damage in a short amount of time.
Considering that roughly 40% of the air you breathe comes directly from the crawl space, it is unhealthy to have this area of the home be contaminated by animals and every measure should be taken to ensure that they do not get in. A couple things that should always be kept in mind:
-Never, never, never feed a raccoon, opossum or skunk unless you intend on having them for a pet.
-Walk around your home and make sure that all your vent screens are in place. Usually this is the only way that they can access your crawl space, so it is critical to have them sealed and in place.
-If your garbage is left outside, be sure that it is secured so that you do not have food source available to them.
If you have signs of wildlife and need to have it addressed, be very careful. In particular, raccoon’s can be very aggressive if they have babies with them. If you are not experienced in dealing with these animals, please give us a call and we can handle them for you.
