TERMITE PEST CONTROL
Termites cause more damage to structures worldwide than any other wood destroying insect, account for billions of dollars. They are far more common in warmer climates, but an active termite infestation in Sandy, Oregon or anywhere else in the Portland area can do just as much damage. There are several species of termites, but around here we just have two that you need to know about:
Subterranean Termites: These are the more destructive of the two and are found in the soil. The colony can have over a million termites in it and feeds on wood, generally preferring soft or rotting woods. The best way to identify subterranean termites is the presence of “mud tubes”. These are basically tubes that are typically the diameter of a pencil that go from the soil to the wood that they are feeding on. If you recognize wood that appears to be damaged by insects, you should be looking for hard fecal pellets that fill the excavated galleries. Treatment of termites is varied, but the most effective approach is to inject the soil with a product that will exterminate the nest.
Dampwood Termites: This type of termite is far less destructive and easier to exterminate than its subterranean cousin. Dampwood termites are larger red termites with wings. They are commonly mistaken for carpenter ants, but can be distinguished by their two segmented body (ants have three segments). A dampwood termite will only infest wood that soft or damp and does not infest wood that is structurally sound. Because of this, the recommended treatment sometimes does not involve using pesticides at all, but just removing the soft or rotting wood.
